Security for WordPress Sites

Creating a site needs creativity skill. There is no doubt in the same. But then, it just does not end at creating the site alone. It is a matter of responsibility on the owner’s side to save the site created as well. And the key question here is that what steps are being taken to ensure the security of the wordpress site. Often, one sees that sites are hacked or something wrong goes with it when one is not at fault. So, it becomes increasingly important to implement tactics and follow up with security checks in this case.

Login Page Protection from Brute-Free Attacks

It is a known fact that the backend of any website is accessed through standard wordpress page URL. So, it is important to customise the page.

-The first step in this regard which can be taken is to use a two-step authentication feature. That means, the account gets logged into only after passing two stage verification. One can also take the help of Google Authentication App for the same.

-Secondly, usage of secret codes is of no harm. Especially when the cyber world has become so susceptible to hacker attacks.

Usage Of Email To Login

Usually, while logging into an account, one uses a username followed by a password after which one can easily login into an account. Here, instead of the username one can very well use an Email ID. This feature is recommended for the sake of security of wordpress sites because it is a tough nut to predict the email id’s than the simpler usernames.

Password Tweaking

When the password is set to be untraceable, there is not much to be done on the side of the hacker who is even trying to hack the account. Password tweaking can be to the extent of changing the password strength by using long passwords, changing the plugins to even using lastpass too. In Lastpass app, the site’s previous login password is going to be stored using a browser add-on. Also, the password needs to be changing frequently so that it does not become stagnant. Stagnancy paves the way for some more hacking.

Security, being an important aspect needs to be taken seriously if not anything else. So, security layers in any form are always welcome as long as the wordpress site is kept secured.

Disabling Of Login Hints

Coming to think of it, the login hints might not just pose as much of a threat in the start. But then, the hackers are smarter than we think to be. They are somehow able to decode the original passwords from the password hints given. Perhaps they do undergo some kind of knowledge transfer for the same, but this is a known fact that decoding passwords is just a child’s play for professional hackers. Hence, it is way much better to disable the login hints altogether from the .php file function. It is way much easier to disable such information than to sit and regret over lost data once the hacking is already done, and there is nothing left to fret over.

The ‘Default’ Admin User creates Problems

Very often, while logging into an account we just keep the username as ‘admin’ as a default. Well, this is the starting point for brute-force attacks in itself. The ‘admin’ keyword in itself is enough to attract hackers. So, what next? Simply, one should avoid using the admin keyword. Instead, the approach could be like to create a new account and give it another nickname without providing any hints for the same. Admin rights might be providing to this account, though. In case, if the ‘admin’ user still exists, it is recommended to delete the old user and create a new account where the ‘admin’ username does not exist.

Update WordPress Site

Whenever, there is an option popping up in the background regarding updating of the wordpress site; it is not for a lark. Considering the security of the wordpress sites, it implies that there have been certain bugs which have been fixed in the wordpress site and some more features which have been added to the site as well. So, instead of just letting it be it is recommended to go in for the updation of the wordpress site by just a small click. Probably there have been changes to protect the site from further attacks; one just cannot leave it out, isn’t it?
